Prayer of a Suicidal Person

Depression

Feelings of frustration, loneliness and hopelessness are not uncommon all throughout the world. These feelings, commonly diagnosed as depression, can in extreme cases lead to suicidal thoughts. If that wasn’t bad enough, some websites actually “guide” readers through a suicide attempt. In the United States alone, there are over 32,000 deaths by suicide each year, the 4th leading cause of death for adults. Internationally, there are about 1 million suicide deaths each year. These numbers are steadily increasing. Generally, more women than men attempt suicide, but (rather ironically) more men die from suicide.

Why are these numbers so high? What does all this mean? The numbers are not just numbers—they represent valuable lives.

At the lowest point of depression the individual suffers from a distorted view of the self, the world, and life in general.

Media and its Influences

Media and Its Influences

media.jpgWhich News is Priority?

In the world of journalism and the media, it is more skill and manipulation than display of the truth. It is also a world of competition and power. Especially in journalism, it is no longer of importance to report about dangers, heroes, and information. With the growth of tabloids, competing stations, ad sponsors, stocks, and ratings, it is now about reporting stories that the public will find amusing. The bottom line comes down to what will raise the ratings.

A man holding his daughter hostage in his apartment for decades is far more interesting than a wildfire that damaged hundreds of houses or an earthquake across the world that killed thousands.

Ethics in the Ambitious World of Journalism

I spoke with a college student who worked on the school newspaper. He came to me with accusations based on some tip he received that we were holding an event there. It was obvious that he was asking questions not to get them answered, but to get the answers that would help make his story.

Eating Disorder. Its Link to Spiritual Well-being.

Anorexia Nervosa is a mental disorder that affects many people each year. Untreated, it can easily result in death. It is also one of the most difficult diseases to treat because the individual has a distorted view of their self image, causing them to feel that they are unattractive and overweight. Although it occurs most frequently among young women, it can occur in men and older adults as well.

There are countless reasons as to why an individual may become anorexic. Studies have shown that individuals with anorexia often “value achievement and outward appearance more than an inner sense of self-worth and self-actualization.” They are often like robots trying to conform to others’ image of what is ideal. By most researchers, the most prevalent cause for this mental disorder is “the media’s pressure of displaying a set norm for the female body.” In most cases, people with anorexia are high achievers and religiously work out. They usually have “distorted images of their bodies that causes them to believe that they could improve their looks or performance by decreasing their weight.” Anorectics avoid high caloric foods and obsessively count calories for each food they eat. This is different from calorie awareness or counting for weight management.

"Wiki-reality"

The "Wiki-Reality" of Wikipedia.org

If you haven’t taken advantage of it, then you’ve at least heard about it already. It is Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that is the favorite resource of many students looking for quick information online. The term “wiki” began as a Hawaiian word meaning “fast” and it is meant to suggest just that: speedy information. But the prefix is used for more than just the Wikipedia website. Just type in “wiki” into wiktionary.com to see all the latest “wiki” websites. Wiki has evolved to mean more than its Hawaiian root; it now defines any collaborative website that can be directly edited by anyone who has access to it. Sounds great? Well, keep reading or you might just become a “wikiholic” (not a real word, but you will find it on wiktionary.com).

The Life and Times of Teacher Joshua Jung Myung Seok

Jung Myung Seok's early childhood

Joshua Jung Myung Seuk

Teacher Joshua Jung (Jung, Myung Seok) was born as the third child among six sons and one daughter. He was born in 1945, at the fourth hour of the day. The address where he was born is 151, Sukmak-ri (Wolmyung-dong or Dalbak-gol), Chinsan-myun, Guemsan-gun, Choongchungnam-do. Sukmak-ri is a high-altitude mountain village at the foot of Mt. Indae. Mt Daedoon stands behind the village like a backdrop.

At age six, Teacher Jung began calling God although no one had taught him about God. At age nine, he started going to church. From early on (since elementary school) he came to understand the emptiness of life. He searched for the answer to the fundamental question of human life and from the fifth grade he started to hear the voice of Jesus. As a teenager, Teacher Joshua Jung committed himself to a life of prayer and serious faith.

He traveled to many churches in order to listen to revival speakers. Their themes were mostly apocalyptic: the judgment of fire, the Rapture, etc. They preached a literal belief in the bible. Teacher Joshua Jung hoped for the coming of the Lord Jesus more eagerly than anybody else because he felt hopeless due to extreme poverty.
